The Core 2 Duo Penryn MacBook Pro with gesture pad (multi-touch trackpad) is now out. These are 2.5Ghz and 2.6Ghz options with NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT with 512MB of GDDR3 RAM. This new configuration is supposed to give you 50% more processing speed. Quite the upgrade. Apple had added an LED option only for 17-inch MBP.

The MacBooks have also been upgraded with the lowest end now having 2.1Ghz of processing speed and 120GB of HD space.

If you’re scheduled to get a new MacBook this is definitely good news, especially since the base prices have not changed (with one exception, which I will mention later), but for those people who’ve bought MacBooks recently, this news stings. My own MacBook looks a little runty now specs-wise, and I was never happy with it to begin with.

To equalize things a little bit, if you buy a MacBook or an MBP now, Apple Remote does not come with the basic package. You can only take it home for an additional $19. Looks like Apple has adjusted their business model yet again.

Apple may be releasing MacBook Pros with gesture or multi-touch track pads like those found in the newly released MacBook Air. Apple may want to keep this hush-hush for now to avoid a sudden stoppage in MBP sales. The new MBPs will probably be arriving at stores this month as this screen shot of Best Buy’s electronic inventory suggests. An MBP with Penryn and multi-touch pad is enough to make potential buyers want to hold on to their money. The new MBP will have a price point of $1999. Is it too much to hope that the price is the new SSD MacBook Air (1.8GHz) MSRP? Probably. Look at this other screen shot.

It only takes 40 minutes to replace the hard disk of a MacBook Pro. If you’re confident enough working with your hands and do not carry static electricity in your person (we all do) then the process may be worth it. Imagine a 320GB storage capacity on a laptop that may very well last five more years, not least because of Apple’s innovative “arrogance.” Curiously, Max Million, the maker of the video used Yael Naim’s single “New Soul.” You get more of the song from this video, however.

We’ve been expecting Apple to announce the multi-touch track pad on MacBook Pros. The news has come too soon for it to be good news to those who have recently purchased a MacBook Pro. Apple will be making the multi-touch trackpad standard on all MacBooks eventually, like iSight is today.

Penryn Core 2 Duo Intel chips will be used in the new MacBook Pros with multi-touch track pads. The 15-inch and 17-inch MBP will be announced, tentatively speaking during the Macworld Expo.

The new MBP models will have the following processor speeds: 15-inch MacBook Pro 2.2GHz to 2.5GHz, MBP 2.4GHz to 2.6GHz and the 17-inch MBP with 2.4 GHz to 2.6GHz. All the new MacBook Pros will be improved from a 4MB L2 Cache to a 6MB L2 Cache.

We’re betting this is not good news for everyone. Any reactions?

Gizmodo is asking about it and I’m wondering, too…. When are they going to put a multi-gesture touch pad on a MacBook Pro?

I disagree with Giz, however, on the point that a 13-inch MacBook Pro some time soon or at any time. The reason is simple:

1. MacBook Air will be the only 13.3-inch aluminum notebook from Apple. They’ll add higher specs and an optical drive, but this is it as far as the aluminum + 13-3-inch LED screen is concerned.

2. MBP is for professional users. You need to edit movies on the go? design a print ad in a hotel room? MacBook Pro is your best friend. You’ll need its big 15-inch or 17-inch screen.

One thing Giz pointed out that I agree wholeheartedly: don’t buy a MacBook Pro after this MacWorld.
