So the big news is that iPhone and iPod Touch SDK has a date of release – we don’t know the exact date but we know it’s going to be June. The good news is that SDK will be free to all iPhone and iPod Touch users. What will not be free are the third-party applications themselves that I’m sure will flow like the waters of the Nile to the Apple site. Why the Apple site? Because, my friends, Apple will have the last word on any third-party apps that they will support and they are NOT going to be free. Apple will launch and sell apps through the new App Store. When you purchase an app you will be given an electronic certificate. I’m sure this is good for people who want to make sure their apps do not jeopardize the iPhone or iPod Touch’s OS. This is what Apple wants, too. Developers will get 70% of the revenues. Already several software companies haveapps ready for the iPhone, among them gaming companies EA and SEGA (wow, a comeback?), AOL and Salesforce.com for business-minded iPhone users.

So far no complaints about Apple’s new business model.

I know it’s too soon for guessing games but a few hours after the release of 1.1.4 firmware update, I have yet to hear of jailbroken iPhones being bricked by updating. Has Apple finally given up trying to get unlockers? Does it make sense to give up on their cut from the wireless providers from iPhones that were supposed to be operated on exclusive carriers? My opinion? Apple is planning to sell unlocked iPhones. It makes a lot of sense. If users are willing to risk bricking their iPhones just to get out of wireless slavery, they will be more than willing to pay for pricier iPhones that comes unlocked out of the box without going into the tedious and illicit process of software hacking.

The much anticipated 1.1.4 firmware is here but besides fixing bugs and superseding past firmware updates, it does absolutely nothing. Despite the fact that this is a huge update that will probably take you half an hour on a slow connection to download, it is unconfirmed whether this will pave the way for SDK. The firmware is available via iTunes. It’s both for the iPhone and iPod Touch, in case you didn’t know. For direct downloads go to the links below.

In-Stat said that there are as many as 400,000 iPhones being used for the China Mobile network.

According to News.com, the In-Stat study indicates “Chinese consumers want smartphones with multimedia features and Web browsing, and the iPhone fills that need nicely. And they’re willing to pay for it: 20 percent of smartphones sold in China last year went for 4,000RMB ($533) or more.”

Here’s another iPhone jailbreak, but this one is coming way left field from AriX, a 13-year-old developer. The iJailbreak developer has released iJailBreak 0.5.1, which unlocks the iPhone within 5 minutes. You can download the jailbreak here. The jailbreak code before that, the 0.5, can unlock 1.1.3 iPhone without “without any soft-upgrade bugs. This is currently iPhone only, however you can expect a version for iPod touches soon. It’s basically a visual frontend for ZiPhone, with a couple of extra features such as fixing the Bus error bug on Macs, and rebooting your iPod/iPhone automatically so you don’t have to fiddle with it.”

It is important to note about the 0.5 that “your iPhone be running a non-jailbroken 1.1.3. IMPORTANT: The unlock ONLY works for bootloader 4.6. When in doubt, don’t use the unlock The actual jailbreaking process will take about 1 minute. If you have an iPhone and would like to unlock and “hactivate” as well (you will get the option when you start the jailbreak, that will take another 2 1/2 minutes.”

iJailBreak 0.5.1 vs. 0.5 – these are similar codes though the 0.5.1 includes fixes to previous bugs and should expand compatibility. A fix for segmentation fault errors and PPC compatibility have also been included in the 0.5.1.

GeoHot has a straightforward method of unlocking 1.1.2 OTB and 1.1.3 OTB iPhones. OTB is out of the box. I’m posting a YouTube video of someone else’s OTB iPhone unlock. Reminder: this is not GeoHot, it’s just an example of what to expect from an OTB unlock.

I’m only posting an excerpt from his blog, but afterward you can click the link to go directly to his 1.1.3 OTB iPhone unlock instruction page. Also, please consider donating to GeoHot via PayPal at geohot@gmail.com.

“These instructions assume that you have already jailbroken the particular firmware you would like to be on. This works from 1.1.2 or 1.1.3 firmware! You can find instructions on how to do that here:

Jailbreak 1.1.2: Windows, Mac
Jailbreak 1.1.3: Installer, Windows, Mac
Downgrade 1.1.3: Windows, Mac

Also, you can only follow these instructions if you are on a 4.6 BL iPhone. This means that your iPhone came with 1.1.2 or 1.1.3 Out of the Box. PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU DON’T DO THIS ON A 3.9 BL IPHONE!

IMPORTANT*: You must have enough disk space free on your iPhone to install this package. Otherwise Installer may display a beach ball and then crash to the Springboard. You need space free on your ROOT file system. Your root file system is about 267M-300M in size. Its NOT the 7.3G file system! A tutorial on how to do this can be found here

Finally, you need BSD Subsystem Installed from Installer app (System Category). This most likely will already be installed especially if you did the 1.1.3 soft update…

If you have 1.1.3 OTB follow the downgrade link above to downgrade and jailbreak your iPhone.”
