Whoops! Those brave souls who have been holding their breath for the iPhone development Community’s 1.1.3 jailbreak may be in for some sobering realization. Ever heard of iPhone SDK (software development kit)? If you still haven’t jailbroken or bricked your iPhones and iPod Touches, know that iPhone Dev team’s jailbreak for firmware 1.1.3 disables Nikita in the OS, which is crucial in supporting future third-party applications. In the words of iPhone developer Jonathan Zdziarski:

“It looks like Nate’s [Nate True, one of the 1.1.3 jailbreak developers] update causes Nikita to break (Nikita is the component on the iPhone/iTouch responsible for installing signed software, such as the iPod App Pack and likely SDK apps in the future),” adding “We believe this is because the soft-update method that was released doesn’t update the kernel cache, so users are likely still booting into the 111 or 112 kernel, which is lacking the necessary DRM components to verify/decrypt packages with Nikita.” Read more.

On a more positive note, Deutsche Telekom is selling 40 iPhones at hour in Germany, totaling 70,000 units for 11 weeks. Source.

Did we say there are already 4 million iPhones sold? Oh, wait. Steve Jobs said that… at MacWorld. Not as good as the 5 million predicted and it gets worse.
Did we say there are already 4 million iPhones sold? Oh, wait. Steve Jobs said that… at MacWorld. Not as good as the 5 million predicted and it gets worse. Enter Toni Sacconaghi, who says there are 670,000 iPhone unaccounted. This is bad with two bad possibilities: there are less iPhones sold than what is expressed in Apple’s sales figures or that the rest is inventory.

AT&T announces that they have activated below 2 million iPhones. After subtracting the 350,000 sold in Europe and the 750,000 that was unlocked, that leaves us with Toni Sacconaghi’s big number. Apple may yet meet their target of 10 illion iPhones before 2008 has ended, but what about AT&T and those European providers. After almost selling out their souls to Apple with Apple’s demand for a huge chunk of revenues from iPhone contracts, they’re now probably feeling a tad neglected. AT&T , O2, T-Mobile, etc. as doormat?

Apple is feeling the bad vibe from Davos, Switzerland. The iPhone, which just sold some 4 or 5 million (hey., they said 5 Steve Jobs announced 4, what can I do), will report a 1-1.2 million units sold for the fiscal quarter ending in March. This projection is steep downgrade from the prior projected number of 2 million iPhones.

The question is, is this an advance effect of the anticipated recession or is this an indication that the iPhone hype is winding down?
