Apparently there are worse problems from the iPhone and iPod Touch firmware upgrade 1.1.3 than what is described below. It’s still unconfirmed but there have been reports that iPhones are being “bricked” by firmware 1.1.3. Yes, some iPhones no longer work after they are upgraded.
People who have upgraded to firmware 1.1.3 for their iPhone or their iPod are reporting that the software is quite unstable. Here are the problems taken from TUAW:
With firmware 1.1.3, the iPhone or iPod Touch does not apply update to iTunes 7.6. One option is to go to recovery mode then restore. Others that have tried to update saw an error message, updated iTunes 7.6 then updated the firmware again.
This is confusing I know and sounding too much like trial and error. The iPhone and iPod Touch are pricey devices to leave to chances. If you are using the iPhone as your only mobile, you might want to delay updating the firmware until Apple resolves these instability issues on firmware 1.1.3 for iPod Touch and iPhone.
For those already in trouble with firmware 1.1.3, you can try the instructions above for failed iTunes 7.6 update. For other problems, read on.
Report to us if you are experiencing firmware 1.1.3 problems.
If I were you, I’d go to the Apple Store to have your iPod Touch fixed. If your iPhone is inoperable, get a cheap unlocked one from another brand.

I tested each of the items you showed above and have no problems with any of them. All of my emails work and my bluetooth works fine. However, my iPhone is vanilla. I haven’t jailbroken it or tried to use another sim.

Upgraded to 1.1.3 this morning, first got unknown error message when installing, tried the restore feature, goes through about 10 mins of preparing and then errors out again. The phone is useless at this point, will take it to Apple store tomorrow.

I had the same problem….after installing itunes 7.6, and then updating to 1.1.3 for ipod touch, the ipod stopped in the middle and froze in recovery mode. After a lengthy wait with Apple Customer support, they talked me through removal of the installed Itunes, (2 helper apps, quicktime, and itunes itself), did a fresh install of itunes (on windows vista) and all went well…i had only one problem after that ….songs would load and then just for no reason it would stop playing….after doing a reset (holding power/home button)….all was fine…i also installed the $20 set of apps and like them a lot….but was dissappointed that i had to pay for them seeing i just got the ipod on Jan14th (release date was the 15th)

I updated my phone which resulted in no phone service, bluetooth or wireless and connecting to iTunes just showed an error saying the phone is damaged. Spent two hours talking to Apple support last night and they couldn’t determine the problem but speculated it’s a hardware problem. They set up an appointment for me at the Apple store.

I have had major issues since updating. my i touch stopped working all together…froze up and would not let me restore. gave error 1604…i tried tons of stuff to get it fixed and nothing worked. finally randomly after being frustrated and not messing with it for 3 days..i tried once again to turn it on and it turned on and allowed the restore to take place…i dont trust that its fixed, but we will see. im not happy about this. and have seen many forums of people with the exact same issue.

I have the iPod touch. It was a gift and I’m quite enamored of it.
The first update (using iTunes), which I believe was from 1.1.1 to 1.1.2 went flawlessly. But, going from 1.1.2 to 1.1.3 was a scary experience. I believe I’ve experienced all the symptoms that others have reported and went through several troubleshooting steps as *recommended* on Apple’s KB articles. Frankly, I don’t know which of those techniques actually restored my touch. It may have been a combination, but who knows which combo did the trick. It took quite a long time before I had a functioning device again. As it is, it was not restored perfectly as the device name on the main screen on the touch no longer has my name — just iPod. (Changing the device name in iTunes doesn’t seem to matter. BTW, iTunes is up to date and installed on Windows XP Pro.)
I thought that would be the end of it. But, I experienced the same gastric disturbances once again while attempting to update from 1.1.3 to 1.1.4! It simply craps out in the middle of the update. Then, when I try to *Restore* to the previous version, I get the ominous: “Unable to restore” error message. The error number seems to be different each time. And, I’m left with a catatonic device.
Having gone through this before, it was not as distressing since I had a little hope of getting it to work again. It still took over an hour, not counting resync, to get it working again. I’m reluctant to upgrade to the next version. The only reason I would do it is because that clearly, there is a problem with the current firmware. I’m hoping that Apple figures this out.
I need to mention that I don’t use that Jailbreak stuff. In fact, it is precisely to avoid complications like these that I consciously decided not to fool around with hacking the iPod. Even so — staying legit has not protected me from mediocre engineering.
